Door shoe sensors
What is a Door shoe sensor?
On many aircraft when the door is open it swings out and protrudes into the aerobridge cabin. In normal operation the bridge lowers and raises automatically through the operation of the auto-leveller which is deployed against the side of the docked aircraft. Should the auto-leveller fail or the nose of the aircraft lowers rapidly, there is a risk that the bottom of the door may strike the floor of the aerobridge. This could damage the aircraft door and in the worst case cause the aircraft to be grounded whilst repairs are carried out.
RATE produces a door shoe sensor which is connected to the aerobridge control system. The sensor is placed by the aerobridge operator under the door whilst it is open. If the sensor is struck by the door it will cause the bridge to lower automatically thus preventing serious damage to the door of the aircraft.
What benefits does a Door shoe sensor provide to airline or airport operator?
Clearly the benefits of the door shoe operating and preventing damage to the aircraft door is obvious but preventing damage also means that the aircraft remains serviceable and avoids costly repair bills to the airline and possible litigation for the airport operator.
